Itinerary:

NOTE: This event is only for accomodations for the weekend. Caving and ice climbing (beginner, intermediate) activities are optional extras and you must sign up and pay for them separately AFTER you sign up for accomodations. There are also other free activities such as XC-skiing, snowshoeing and hiking in the area. Enrollment for the caving and ice climbing activities are limited. If you sign up for accomodations but don't get onto the caving and ice climbing events due to capacity, you will NOT be refunded your accomodations cost. You can always find something else to do in the mountains! (see below)

The HI-Banff Alpine Centre is a superior grade hostel located in Banff. On-site amenities include gorgeous common areas, self- serve kitchens, a cafe (Cougar Pete), pub (Storm Cellar) and free Wi-Fi (full linen is included, sleeping bags not allowed). We will go down Friday night (approx. 4.5 hour drive), stay Friday night and Saturday night and return Sunday. Rooms will be shared. Price includes both nights accomodation only.

ACTIVITIES:

Ice Climbing: There will be two ice climbing events on Saturday. One is for beginners with no experience. The other is for people that have ice climbed before. If interested, you MUST sign up for this separately. Please see details for the beginner and intermediate events. If you have prior experience, please sign up for the intermediate event.

Caving: There will be a caving tour setup for Sunday. If interested, you MUST sign up for this separately. Details HERE.

XC-Skiing: There are beautiful trails to XC ski on in the Banff and surrounding areas. Catherine will be leading expeditions out for those interested. You do not need to sign up for this in advance. You are responsible for your own equipment.

Other local activities include hiking and snowshoeing. Several downill ski resorts are accessible from Banff (eg: Lake Louise, Sunshine, Norquay, Kicking Horse). The Lake Louise and Banff townsites are also worth visiting. There are also hotsprings and ice canyon tours available in the area. Please contact the hostel for more information.

Carpool note: with the uncertainty of winter road conditions, it is recommended that members arrange their own rides with someone they know and can rely on. We will of course help arrange carpool for those that need it, but please note that refunds will not be given if a carpool arrangement falls through. And as with any carpool event, non-driving members may be bumped for driving members on the waitlist if we do not have enough drivers.

Carpool payment: for those that do want the EOC to arrange carpool for you, we have a new communal payment system. Please DO NOT pay your drivers en route. Passengers will pay me at the hostel and I will distribute the money to the carpool drivers evenly. SO PLEASE BRING CASH!!!

Roommate note: because we are all arriving at different times on Friday and each room is locked, the hostel requires that I assign people to rooms ahead of time. You may arrange your own roommates (4/room), or we can do it for you. If you wish to arrange your own roommates, you MUST send Jason the list by registration cutoff, or we will assign you a room.
