Itinerary:

NOTE: This event is only open to those participating in the main Extravaganza event. Please sign up for that one first.

NOTE: If you do NOT have prior ice climbing experience, please sign up for the beginner ice climbing event.

This not a learn to ice climb event - there will be no instruction. You must have done an ice climbing course (like the one offered by the Centre for Outdoor Education) or have previous ice climbing experience. E-mail or call Karen (907-9451) to sign up - there are 6 spots available. This event will be cancelled if we don't have at least 4 people.

What better way to start a weekend of adventure in Banff than to go ice climbing! We will spend a day honing our climbing skills and learning new techniques.

We will wake up early and drive to Canmore to meet our guide at 7:30am from On Top Mountaineering who will take us out to either: Johnston Canyon (35 min walk in) or the Canmore Junkyards (10 min walk uphill). The location will depend on the conditions.

After a full day of climbing (ending by 4 or 5pm), we'll head back to the hostel to meet up with the rest of the group on the Extravaganza Weekend and head out for the evening (maybe make a stop at the hot springs to sooth our weary muscles before dinner?).

Please read OnTop Mountaineering's waiver BEFORE you sign up.

***NOTE: It is YOUR responsibility to get your own mountaineering boots for this event. Mountaineering boots are specialized shoes for ice climbing and are the only ones that will work with the other equipment we're using that day. Equipment other than mountaineering boots (crampons, ice axe, helmet, harness) will be provided. It is recommended that you have plastic mountaineering boots, however leather ones are acceptable if they are designed for waterfall ice climbing. There are several places to rent mountaineering boots (MEC, UofC, Mountain Magic of Banff, etc.). Be sure to secure them early and keep in mind where/when you have to pick them up and drop them off. If you show up without mountaineering boots, you will NOT be refunded the event fee. ***
