We had an awesome weekend with perfect weather. As always the highlight was another classic EOC potluck, party in the hot tub and around the fire Saturday night. Earlier on Saturday we worked on our appetites when we hiked to three sets of waterfalls in the Kooteney Plains called Siffleur Falls. We saw lots of wildlife including a black bear on the side of the highway while detouring to the staging area. On Sunday we hiked to the top of Shunda Mountain (a.k.a. the Baldy Fire Lookout) and enjoyed a 360 degree panorama that takes in both the forest-carpeted foothills and the snow-caps of the Rocky Mountains. Thanks to Joe the seasoned cowboy, and not so semi retired fire ranger, who has dedicated 12 years to fire watch duties on Shunda Mountain. Joe is a gracious host to hikers especially when a group of beautiful women and their handsome chaperones are his audience while listening to his account of the joys and challenges of working at fire towers in Alberta.
I would recommend those areas of David Thompson Country to anyone who is looking for a pristine wilderness experience, enjoyable hikes and epic scenery.
