Mosquitos!

Fifteen people came out to Century Park early Saturday morning, and we car-pooled down to Miquelon Provincial Park. After a bit of confusion, we managed to get to the trailhead and set out at around 10:00AM.

Despite judicious applications of bug spray, we found ourselves within minutes being pursued by hordes of ravenous mosquitos. After a few additional stops to slather on backup layers of DEET, they stopped most of their biting and just became a nuisance. We covered the outside loops of the Miquelon 'backcountry' trails, discovering some old abandoned farmsteads by the trail, and in the more remote sections, numerous examples of bear scat and tracks. An attempt to stop halfway for a break was foiled by the bugs, and we pushed on instead.

We were back at the cars by noon, then headed down to the beach for lunch and a swim. Despite some early hesitation, most people managed to go in for a wade to rinse off the bug spray, and some people got in a swim. A little badminton, some food and some sun, then we drove back to Edmonton.

In spite of the bugs, it was a a nice little drive to one of the more accessible parks in the Edmonton area and a pleasant way to spend a summer Saturday.
