Itinerary:
Alberta Water Quality Awareness (AWQA) Day is a province-wide initiative focused on increasing our awareness and understanding of water quality and watershed health, through hands-on water quality testing. The findings are compiled annually to create a citizen-generated snapshot of water quality in our province. The program is modeled after World Water Monitoring Day, a successful global program that promotes watershed protection through public stewardship.

The water testing kit we will use has been provided free of charge by the Alberta Water Quality Awareness Day program, and will allow us to test water pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO) content and turbidity at several surface water locations. Please review the testing procedures on the AWQA Day site.

You could encounter muddy, rainy conditions, etc – dress accordingly. Be sure to bring water to keep hydrated and bring rain gear if needed. All necessary supplies for conducting the water testing will be provided.

If you wish, you can look at a factsheet from the Government of Alberta that describes the AWQA Day program and what it is all about.

There are a few geocaches in this little known area. We will look for "Giochiamo il gioco del calcio" and "Lac LaIntuit". Both will require some bushwacking, so wear good boots but definitely not your best coat. If we're feeling especially adventurous, we will take on the challenge of "Log Into It".

For those not familiar with geocaching, please visit Geocaching.com for more information. It is a worldwide hobby where people hide boxes of trinkets and post their GPS coordinates for others to find. It's treasure hunting by GPS! Shirley has a GPS, so you don't need to have one to participate in this event, but if you happen to have one then go to the web site, sign up, find the cache, and load up all of the coordinates you will need. Try the 'map it' option after typing in your home postal code to find the caches around you - then just zoom out and zoom into the Roper Rd. and 75th St. area and you'll find the various caches. Double click on the cache symbols to get to the geocache pages.

Dogs can be off leash here, so feel free to bring your dogs, but they will need to be on leash until we are finished water sampling so they don't mess up our samples.

After water sampling and geocaching, we will go for a short hike around the ponds.
