Itinerary:
Elk island is, for lack of a better word, an island of natural beauty in Edmonton's back yard. So come enjoy autumn and get away from the city for a few hours. The hike will be a moderate pace with occasional stops to enjoy the scenery and wildlife.

We will be hiking:
Shirley Lake Trail 12.6 km (3 - 4 hours)
Shirley Lake is named after the daughter of Dr. Love, an early superintendent. Numerous shallow lakes and ponds along the trail make it ideal for observing nesting waterfowl. The trail also passes through meadows where the elusive elk can occasionally be spotted, particularly at dawn and dusk.
As this is a large group, we will all meet at the trail head and then split into two smaller groups going opposite directions around the trail loop.

Expect soft ground with occasional mud. Please bring good footwear and dress for the weather!

The park charges per person ($7.80), but a single park pass will get a whole car in, so I will try to organize a carpool if anyone is interested. Please contact me if you want to be in the carpool, and I will send you the location.

Carpool Cost: The event coordinator(s) will help you to arrange a centralized carpool if you require it, but it's not guaranteed. Please DO NOT pay your driver en route. Passengers will pay the coordinator, and he/she will distribute the money to the carpool drivers. SO PLEASE BRING CASH!!! Approximate vehicle expense for this event is $24.65 (calculated at total Km * $0.29, effective Wednesday, May 1, 2024). This is based on $0.09/Km for maintenance, plus current gas price divided by 9. This cost will be multiplied by the number of carpooled cars, and divided by the number of carpool participants.
