I am cancelling this event due to lack of interest. I have booked three campsites at Miquelon Lake Provincial Park for the night of August 17-18. After we arrive on Saturday (August 17th), we will have some free time to enjoy all that Miquelon Park offers. I am hopeful that we should be able to set up camp on arrival (it is possible that we may not be able to set up camp until mid- afternoon, however, because the check-out time at Miquelon Park isn't until 2 PM).

I am planning to lead a hike through the park during the afternoon, which should be approximately 10 km distance, taking the group about 2 hours to complete.

Other options for day time activities could include canoeing/kayaking on Miquelon Lake or bicycling in the park. Participants will need to make their own arrangements to bring canoes/kayaks/bicycles if planning to participate in any of these activities. The park also has a sandy beach which is suitable for relaxing/sunbathing, but warns that the lake is generally not suitable for swimming.

If there is sufficient interest, after breaking camping on Sunday, but before returning to Edmonton, we might also go to Camrose (located 30 km - or 20 minutes by car - from Miquelon Provincial Park) to hike in Camrose’s Stoney Creek Park. The Camrose Ski Club, which manages the trails in Stoney Creek Park in the winter for cross- country skiing, prov ides maps of the extensive trail system in the park.

The Perseids Meteor Shower is also active from July 17- August 24 and can be quite spectacular! Our camping trip will occur a few days after the Perseids reach their peak (night of August 12-13), but we should still see a show in the skies. Miquelon Provincial Park is an excellent place for stargazing because it is part of the Beaver Hills Dark Sky Preserve, along with Elk Island National Park and Blackfoot/Cooking Lake Provincial Recreation Area. Measures have been taken at all of these parks to reduce the amount of artificial light, in order to enhance viewing of the sky. The Beaver Hills Dark Sky Preserve was established in 2006 as a partnership between Parks Canada, Alberta Parks and the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada.

If you are planning to join in on stargazing and meteor watching, make sure that you bring something comfortable to sit or lie on while viewing the sky, and make sure that you dress warmly. Even though this event is planned for late summer, the late evening/early morning air could get rather chilly. In order to register for this event, please do the following:

  • Add your name to the waiting list for this event
  • Fill in and submit this Google Form
  • Make arrangements with Ryan for payment of camping fees ($13 per person).

When you fill in the Google Form, you will be asked to answer several questions about tenting arrangements and ride-sharing arrangements. Answers to these questions will better allow me to organize this event.

I will be able to transfer people from the waiting list after I have both received payment and the Google Form has been filled in. Due to the constraints placed by Alberta Parks (maximum occupancy is two tents per campsite), priority will be given to members who indicate that they are willing to share a tent with another member.
