Itinerary:
Join me for an evening of climbing at Verti cally Inclined Rock Gym.

There is no predetermined structure to this activity - this is simply an event aimed at allowing people a chance to climb.

In order to climb without staff assistance, you will have to have a belay check at VIRG. To pass a belay check, you must demonstrate to VIRG staff that before climbing you can safely tie the rope to your harness, and you must demonstrate that you can safely belay another climber. The belay check costs $5.

Types of Climbing: Bouldering is the term used for free climbing without the use of ropes. No previous experience is needed for bouldering. There is a set height limit on the walls where bouldering is permitted - so, if you fall, you won't be seriously hurt.

Top rope climbing involves the use of ropes and requires more safety equipment than bouldering (harnesses, belay devices and locking carabiners). The ropes are anchored above the climbing wall. As long as everyone follows the appropriate safety rules, you can safely climb to the top of the wall – if you fall, you won’t fall very far at all. You must work with a partner while participating in top rope climbing - one person climbs, while the other belays (takes away the slack in the rope as the climber scales the wall).

Lead Climbing is a more advanced type of climbing. Instead of being anchored above the climbing wall as in top rope climbing, lead climbers anchor the rope to different places on the wall as they climb. If you fall when lead climbing, you actually do fall some distance.

If you are new to climbing, I do recommend trying to register for the "Getting Into It" course (normally $59 + GST – which includes the rental cost for all of the gear that you'll require for an evening of climbing). This course isn't offered on the night of this event, but is offered regularly by VIRG on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. You get full instruction on how to start top rope climbing in the “Getting Into It” course, including training on how to properly tie ropes to you harness. The course fee also includes a one-week pass to VIRG for more climbing. Other facilities, such as the Wilson Climbing Centre at the University of Alberta, also offer instructional courses that can potentially provide you with skills you need to start climbing at VIRG.

You can also take the “Climbing Adventure” drop-in program ($30 plus GST, which includes the cost of all of the equipment that you'll need for an evening of climbing). Pre- registration is not required for the Climbing Adventure – the VIRG staff offer it on demand. Unlike "Getting Into It", the Climbing Adventure program does not give enough instruction to allow you to come back to take your belay check, but it does provide sufficient instruction for you to at least try climbing using the ropes.
