This is a weekend backpack trip to picturesque Egypt Lake in Banff. To spice it up a bit from a regular in-and-out trip, we're going to take a slightly different route in than we are out!

There are actually many ways to get to Egypt Lake, but my plan is to take the most commonly hiked route (via Healy Pass), and to start from Sunshine Meadows. Most hiking books describe a hiking route that begins from the Sunshine Village skihill parking lot, which involves a 655 m uphill slog to Healy Pass. However, we will save our energy by instead taking a shuttle bus from the base parking lot to the upper Sunshine Village ski area. By taking the bus, we will avoid 520 m of elevation gain, and instead of 655 m uphill to Healy Pass (over 9.2 km), we will hike approximately the same distance (9.1 km) but will follow a more undulating route along the continental divide (165 m elevation gain over 2 km to Wawa Ridge, 225 m descent over 3.6 km to Simpson Pass, 195 m gain over 3.5 km to Healy Pass - collectively 360 m of elevation gain). After reaching Healy Pass, we descend 335 m over 3 km to reach Egypt Lake. We will descend from Healy Pass on Sunday via the direct route that will take us right down to the parking lot.

It should take us approximately 3 to 4 km to complete the hike to Egypt Lake. Once we have arrived and set up camp, we can relax. Depending on our energy level and how long it takes us to reach camp, we might also consider taking an additional day-hike in the area after we set up camp - there are a wide range of dayhikes that begin from Egypt Lake.

The following day, we'll make our way back over Healy Pass, and continue with a gradual descent to return to the parking area.

I plan to depart on Friday evening (July 18) after work at 5 PM-ish. I have booked one campsite (and if there is sufficient interest may book a second site) at the Tunnel Mountain campground in Banff. A departure from Edmonton on Saturday morning is possible for anyone who wishes to sign up but doesn't want to camp on Friday, but the group must all be at Sunshine Village parking lot in time for the 11 AM shuttle bus.

An optional pre-trip meeting will be held on July 14th at Block 1912 (10361 Whyte Ave), during which those attending will discuss carpool options and other issues relating to the hike (e.g. possible tent partnerships, shared equipment, etc.).

REGISTRATION NOTES: Please note that registration is not complete until you have submitted payment to me for this event. If you are on registered list but have not paid, please be aware that I may move you to the waiting list in favour of waitlisted members who do pay.
