Itinerary:

We will drive out early Friday evening (5pm) and stay overnight at the Shunda youth hostel in Nordegg. We will need to be leaving the hostel at 9am sharp to drive about 1 hour west into Banff to the Glacier Lake trailhead.

We will hike into Glacier lake at a moderate pace (3km/hour). Round trip of 18km and cumulative elevation gain of 475m. Time 5-8 hours.

We will drive back home to Edmonton with a stop in Rocky for a quick supper.

This trip is best suited to hikers who are in good physical shape and who are looking to wind down the hiking season. Expect the trail to be very wet and muddy with snow patches and or fresh snow. Must be comfortable hiking in late season conditions. Note: our maximum elevation is 1680m.

    How to Get There:
    Event Directions:

    Directions to Shunda Hostel: South on Hwy 2 until the Lacombe turn off Hwy 12. West on Hwy 12 until you come to Hwy 22. South on Hwy 22 until you come to Hwy 11. West on Hwy 11 until you come to Nordegg.

    The hostel is just west of Nordegg, 3 km north of Highway 11 on the Shunda Creek Recreation Area Road. Keep left at the fork in the road.

    Directions to glacier lake trailhead: From Saskatchewan River Crossing, where Davd Thompson hwy (11) intersects the Icefields Parway (hwy 93), drive the parkway 1km northwest. Turn left (southwest) into the trailhead parking area.

    Carpool Cost: The event coordinator(s) will help you to arrange a centralized carpool if you require it, but it's not guaranteed. Please DO NOT pay your driver en route. Passengers will pay the coordinator, and he/she will distribute the money to the carpool drivers. SO PLEASE BRING CASH!!! Approximate vehicle expense for this event is $232.00 (calculated at total Km * $0.29, effective Thursday, May 2, 2024). This is based on $0.09/Km for maintenance, plus current gas price divided by 9. This cost will be multiplied by the number of carpooled cars, and divided by the number of carpool participants.

    Notes:

    - Registration is NOT COMPLETE until you've signed up and paid by the registration cut off date. The money must be in the EOC's possession by that date. No exceptions.
    - When a minimum group size appears, this is to let you know that the event will be cancelled with refunds to those who have already paid, if the minimum number of registered participants is not met. For any events where EOC needs a minimum number of participants, there will be absolutely no refunds of money if you cancel.
    - We encourage all members to follow our Etiquette Guidelines at all times while participating in EOC events.
