Itinerary:
The Science in the Cinema movie series is organized by Alberta Innovates - Health Solutions. All of the film events in the series are free (they also provide free popcorn). After the film is shown, there will be a short Q and A led by a health science researcher who will discuss science issues relating to the film. For the March 20th screening, the discussion after the film will be led by Dr. Katherine Aitchison of the University of Alberta.

The film that we will see is It's Kind of a Funny Story , a 2010 comedy-drama film that stars Keir Gilchrist, Emma Roberts and Zach Galifianakis. Craig is a high-school junior, in the gifted program, infatuated with his best friend's girl. When he realizes he's suicidal, he checks himself into the psychiatric ward of a hospital, thinking they'll do an observation, help him, and send him home in time for school the next day. Once in, however, he must stay for a week; the juvenile ward is being renovated, so he's in with adults as well as a few youths. Bobby, a man with a young daughter, shows him around; Craig notices Noelle, about his age. He tries to keep his friends from finding out where he is. Little things: he draws, goes to therapy, sings, helps Bobby rehearse an interview. Is this the stuff of insight?

You can also watch a trailer for It's Kind of a Funny Story.

Please meet me inside the Garneau Theatre at 6:00 PM, outside the doors to the main auditorium. I will have a yellow ballcap with the EOC logo on it to help you spot me. At 6:15 (or once everyone has arrived) we'll find seats together inside the auditorium. Based on prior Science in the Cinema events that I have attended I would expect the film screening to begin promptly at 6:30 and that the theatre will be packed, so if you arrive late please find your own seat inside the auditorium and let me know afterwards (by text/e-mail) so that I don't flag you as a no- show for the event.

The film is listed as 101 minutes in length and will likely end around 8:15. The Q&A that follows should last 20-30 minutes. Afterwards, if there is sufficient interest, the group may go to a nearby pub for a late bite or drink.
