Itinerary:

With summer hiking in the mountains/foothills upon us, it is important to be as prepared as possible.

I am happy that Dan LeGrandeur is available once again to teach us a wildlife awareness course. He will be discussing how to become more prepared in avoiding and dealing with bear and other wildlife encounters.

Dan is a former B.C. conservation officer with many years of experience in dealing with wildlife, especially bears. He will be showing slides and video clips, including many from his own experiences.

Click here for a link to the Bear Scare website.

Dan will teach us about bear behavior and the fact that they are more predictable than most of us think. We will learn basic bear biology, identification, behavior and how to prevent and respond to bear and other wildlife encounters. With this knowledge, we will be better able to assess the risks and take the appropriate actions when encountering a bear, and better yet, how to best try and avoid encounters.

Specifically, we will learn about: grizzly and black bear identification, bear ecology, bear behaviour, cougar ecology, human/wildlife conflicts, wildlife encounters (defensive and predatory), response to bear encounters, response to cougar encounters and the use of non-lethal deterrents.

Dan also sells bear spray at a discounted rate so I have asked him to bring some along in case anyone is interested in purchasing one for themselves (about $25/can compared to a much higher price in the stores).
