NOTE NEW DATE

A great event for the whole family!

Time to celebrate back-to-school season by taking a step back in time and playing some old-school, schoolyard games! We'll go to Hawrelak Park (meet east of paddle boat rental) and stake out a space to play some group games. Please bring a picnic lunch as well as we'll take a break to have lunch during the fun. I'll also bring a bocce ball set, frisbee, soccer ball and small football for other diversions as the group sees fit.

There are lots of games kids play so we have quite the menu. Of course, we don't have to play them all, and suggestions are welcome (please send by email if possible). The nature of schoolyard games is that they are simple, require minimal equipment and rules are verbal and negotiable before a game starts. As with schoolyard games in days of summers past, a plethora of common injuries are possible including, but not limited to: skinned knees, bruises and the emotional trauma of being picked last for a team.

Possible Games:

*** Red Rover ***

Players on a team hold hands, forming a "chain". The leader of a team will call a player from the opposing team. That player must try and break through two players' hands (a link) to stay on their own team. If the player is not able to break through the link, that team will gain control of that player. Before a player would try to break the link, the link would normally say "Red Rover, red Rover, _________ (player's name) come on over!"

When only one player is left on a team, they must try and break through a link. If they do not succeed, the opposing team wins. Otherwise, they are able to get a player back for their team.

*** Sock Dodge City ***

This is a mix of dodge ball and... goaltending. 2-4 teams form a large circle, arm's length apart to make a perimeter. The objective is to throw a balled up sock (or bean bag) towards the other team. If it gets past the other team's perimeter, a point is counted. If the receiving team is able to catch the sock ball, the thowing player is ejected. Game continues until 10-20 points. Multiple sock balls can be used simultaneously.

*** Amoeba tag (blob tag, courtesy of Carla D) ***

It begins with 1 person being “it”, they must ‘tag’ another person, the 2 people then link arms and continue on to ‘tag’ a third person who then links arms with those 2, creating a chain of 3. Only the free arms at the end of the chain can tag additional people. When the chain has grown into 4 people the Amoeba can split into 2 amoebas of 2 people and they continue chasing people down, this continues until everyone has been tagged. Winner is the last person caught.

*** Capture the flag (courtesy of Carla D) ***

Requires a large field with a clearly defined line down the middle, each side needs a ‘flag’ and a ‘jail’.

The group divides into 2 sides, the goal is to enter the opposing sides half, grab their flag and return to your half of the field without being tagged by any member of the opposing team. If you are tagged, you must go stand in the jail, the first person in the jail must be touching whatever the jail is, (rock, coat, hoop) the next person only needs to be touching someone who is touching the jail, therefore it is possible to stretch out the jail to make it as close to the other side as possible. The only way to be freed from jail is for someone from your own team to run in and touch one of the people in jail, and then they are all free. There are 2 ways capture the flag is played at this point 1) when freed from jail you all raise your hands above your head and walk back to your own side. 2) You are just released from jail, you can still be tagged and you are still allowed to make a run for the flag. The game continues until the flag is captured.

*** Scrabble Tag ***

This is a non-violent version of Blue Murder. Two teams take turns being Team A and Team B. Team A chooses a word that has a number of letters equal to the number of team members, and assigns a letter to each member. Team B must capture 'letters' from the other team. Once a letter is captured, he/she is out. The person of Team B that captures that letter can have the option of making a guess of the word. But if he/she is wrong, he/she is out. The team that guesses the word with the least number of captured letters wins.

*** French Cricket ***

This is suitable for smaller groups (5-10). A circle is formed and a batter stands in the middle with a stick. This player must protect the wicket while the bowlers around the circle take turns trying to hit the wicket with a tennis ball. The wicket in this case is the the batter's legs, below the knees. The batter is not allowed to move his feet. If the batter is able to bat the ball outside of the circle, he scores a point. The ball must be low enough to catch. If a bowler is able to hit the wicket, or catches the batter's ball, the bowler becomes the batter. Game goes till the winner has 10 points.
