Itinerary:

We will explore the Chickakoo Lake Recreation Area north of Stony Plain. The trails are a series of loops offering intermittent views of a number of small lakes and a couple of different habitats. We will be going at a moderate pace, so those with some experience should be able to keep up, but we will mostly be hiking on the intermediate to advanced trails. There will be a number of steeps hills along the way, so be prepared for some exercise. The distance will be about 10-12km. Click here for a map of the trails.

If you are driving yourself and meeting at the trailhead, we will meet at the trailhead at 9:45AM and leave promptly at 10:00AM.

Or meet at the carpool location at 9:00 and leave at 9:15 am. Overflow lot at West Edmonton Mall. Just north of the mall.

For driving to Chichakoo... Major construction was underway on RR 779 but is reported to be open now. We should be able to use the usual access route off of Yellowhead, however, its your choice on driving... See the "Directions" section for more info.

How to Get There:
Event Directions:The RR 779 is now reported to be open. But for alternate access.... Please follow these instructions carefully for alternate access, and if you get lost, phone for directions. Basically, the route has been shifted to the East by one main Range Road (#274), and North to a different Township Road (#540).

Take Yellowhead (Highway 16) west to the Campsite Road turnoff at Spruce Grove, go north. Campsite Road becomes Range Rd. 274.

Turn west on Twp Rd. 540. It does a little jog north onto RR 275, then continues west at a T-intersection as Twp. Rd. 540 again..

Continue across RR#779 past a couple of small lakes, and in just a few kilometers you will see signs for Chickakoo directing you south down a gravel road. Look for the signs to the trailhead (upper parking lot.)
Carpool to Event Distance (round trip):80Km
Carpool Departure Time: 9:15 AM
Carpool Location:   Log in for location
Carpool Directions:   Log in for directions
Carpool Cost: The event coordinator(s) will help you to arrange a centralized carpool if you require it, but it's not guaranteed. Please DO NOT pay your driver en route. Passengers will pay the coordinator, and he/she will distribute the money to the carpool drivers. SO PLEASE BRING CASH!!! Approximate vehicle expense for this event is $23.20 (calculated at total Km * $0.29, effective Saturday, April 27, 2024). This is based on $0.09/Km for maintenance, plus current gas price divided by 9. This cost will be multiplied by the number of carpooled cars, and divided by the number of carpool participants.
