Itinerary:
Shuttle out to Maligne Canyon with Ben from Mountain Madness Tours for a day of winter adventures. Ben will pick us up at Belmead Shopping Centre at 7:00 (depart at 7:15 sharp, so be on time), drop us off at Maligne Canyon for our adventures, and then pick us up there again at 4:00PM to return to Edmonton.

We will do an ice hike in Maligne Canyon for a couple of hours. The canyon floor is transformed by ice formations such as free standing frozen water falls and ice caves. You will absolutely need proper traction devices for this part of the day. See "Required Items to Bring". If you haven't got the required items you will be left behind in Edmonton!

After the ice hike, we'll strap on the snow shoes and explore the area a bit - perhaps trekking alongside Maligne Lake Road or looking for something more tantalizing (without entering avalanche danger zones).

The coordinators, although very experienced at ice hiking and snow shoeing in Banff, have never done so in Jasper before so if you have any ideas or suggestions they would be greatly appreciated. Also, patience and flexibility for unforseen circumstances through the day will be essential.

Required Items to Bring:
- Boots appropriate to our chosen activities. Sorel-style winter boots will be fine, as will hiking boots with gaiters. Some cross-country ski boots might work as well.
- Ice traction devices for the ice hike. We recommend Microspikes or Stabilicers. Full-on crampons will likely work if you have those. Yaktrax definitely will NOT work.
- Snow shoes
- Proper clothing, bring layers in case of weather changes. NO COTTON - it is the death fabric in the outdoors, especially in the winter and shoulder seasons. If you show up in cotton (incl denim), you will be turned away with no refund.
- Food
- Water (approx 2L)
Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.
- Hiking poles
- Gaiters
- Toque
- Gloves

How to Get There:
Event Directions:Get to Belmead Shopping Center (18228 89 Avenue NW - at the corner of 182 St and 89 Ave) at 7:00 for a 7:15AM departure in Ben's van.

Notes:
Winter safety considerations:
- Information entered by Rhonda on January 4, 2010
- Conditions: the conditions in Jasper as of January 4th per Parks Canada is Moderate in Alpine and Treeline and Low Below Treeline.
- Plan: The ice walk portion of this event will not be affected by avalanche concerns, however, the snow shoe portion of the trip must take avalanche danger into consideration. We will be staying in clear no-danger zones. Additionally, before the trip, the coordinators will again check the current bulletins with Parks Canada and Canadian Avalanche Centre bulletins.
- Note that EOC event coordinators are volunteers and are not trained guides. All participants are responsible for assessing the current road conditions, current weather conditions, current trail conditions and current avalanche conditions for the trip.

- Registration is NOT COMPLETE until you've signed up and paid by the registration cut off date. The money must be in the EOC's possession by that date. No exceptions.
- When a minimum group size appears, this is to let you know that the event will be cancelled with refunds to those who have already paid, if the minimum number of registered participants is not met. For any events where EOC needs a minimum number of participants, there will be absolutely no refunds of money if you cancel.
