We had a beautiful sunny day to go back in history at Fort Edmonton. We hopped on the steam engine (in 3rd class - standing room only!!) and stuck our heads out to enjoy the ride to the year 1846, better known as the Fort. There we learned about life in those times and had a demonstrationon putting the pelts into bales and then learned how the trading was done (and even found out about the "giving away" of the wives to another man as the European husbands left the settlement!). Our next stop was in 1885 where Julie got to sample some homemade turnip soup - apparently it was good but could have been better without the turnips. And during this time period there was a chicken that took great joy in "stalking" us and seemed quite happy to receive some cookie crumbs. Next was 1905 where Koosha tried his hand at the shooting gallery andJason became the next leader of the Masons - should we all be wearing buffalo hats now? After having a drink and lunch at the historical Hotel Selkirk, we were surprised to discover that the sun had disappeared and gray clouds had taken it's place. We got back on the steam train and were quite happy to find out that we were bumped up to 1st class for the ride to 1920, the midway. Like a group of children, we headed off for the carousel and took a ride on the horses. And finished the day watching in awe as Larry almost rang the bell (it was just a mm off of dinging!) with his great hammering strength. It was a great day even with the downpour at the end of our visit,. Thanks to everyone for coming out and thank you to our unofficial tour guide, Mark!
