We had a good weekend. Recent snow high in the valley and on the ridges made us change our plans. We did not make Bovin Lake on our first day. We made it to a 2150m saddle between Victoria Peak and Victoria Ridge. We decided to make camp here amongst some spruce trees. For the most part, we had a pleasant enough night even though we were not expecting to camp in 2 ft of snow. Next day we hiked back down the valley. Andrea and I made a go of the summit of Victoria Ridge but were turned back due to high winds. We went to Waterton to have supper and relax. Next day we hiked up to Goat Lake. We then continued along the trail to reach the col connecting Avion Ridge and Newman Peak. This col is the boundary for Waterton Lakes. We then took 20 minutes and ascended Newman Peak, (2515m). It was a nice feeling to reach a summit given our efforts for the weekend and not being able to make our initial plans. Our hike back down was good. We enjoyed a nice sit down dinner in Waterton before returning home to Edmonton at 11:45pm. All in all, a nice weekend despite not making our goal of Avion Ridge via Victoria Ridge. Will have to make this a priority next year when the ridges and high valleys are free of snow. My highlights were the turkey dinner buffet, camping at the saddle in the snow and testing out my new sleeping bag, and of course reaching Newman Peak. The group was good and I look forward to more adventures with them. Jeff
