Itinerary:
I would like to spend the day and do some hiking in the Maligne Lake area. I would like to reach the summit of Opal Peak (2800m). This official mountain requires a steady hike on the Opal Hills trail to which the trailhead begins at Maligne Lake. At some point along the trail when high enough and in sight of Opal Peak, we will leave the trail behind and hike towards the peak. The hiking distance should be less than 10km and the elevation about 1100m. Please note the start time and we will need to keep a steady pace as daylight hours are less.

There could be some fresh snow in this area which may require either icers, yak trax, or even better, crampons. I have placed this equipment in the required items as to be prepared should we encounter a little snow, it will help with the hike should the trail be slippery.

This is a hike that should be done by experienced hikers only due to the time of year, elevation, and the off trail conditions.

Please note that your co-ordinator has not done this hike before but really wants to do it, so please be patient for any unforseen situations. There is no guide book that has Opal Peak though many sites elude to the extension of the trail to include Opal Peak. Here is a reference from Peakfinder: Opal Peak

I am sure we will have a nice dinner in Hinton on the way back to Edmonton. If you have any questions about this trip, email me.
