|For a change of scenery, I would like to hike along the
waterfront trails in Fort Saskatchewan that follow alongside the
North Saskatchewan River (*this event will be
new trails to us compared to previous Fort Sask events)
. This will be a moderately paced hike, with some single
track technical hiking trails along the river.
We will begin our hike at the Canadian Brewhouse, which is located on the south west side of Fort Saskatchewan. We will then work our way west along City trails towards North Saskatchewan River waterfront, heading towards the Wetlands Conservation Area and the boat launch (on the west side of Fort Saskatchewan). We will then travel along the waterfront single track trails before looping back around the Fish Pond, and an interpretive forest trail. The total round trip distance back to our starting point at Canadian Brewhouse is approximately 10km.
After completing our hike, those interested can join us for a late snack at a the Canadian Brewhouse, before your return to Edmonton.
Did you know: Fort Saskatchewan is at the eastern end of an initiative by the River Valley Alliance to build a network of trails that extend all the way from Devon to Edmonton? The Fort Saskatchewan region is also the western terminus of the Iron Horse Trail, and the southern terminus of the Athabasca Landing Trail. The Athabasca Landing Trail project is raising funds to build a footbridge that would potentially use the piers left by the abandoned railway bridge which would connect trail systems on both sides of the river, and connect the Fort Saskatchewan waterfront trail to the Athabasca Landing Trail.
**Please be aware with wintery weather, the trail could be slippery in some sections.Ice cleats that go over your boots are recommended. These can be found at Mountain Equipment Coop, or other sporting stores.
You could encounter muddy, icy, snowy conditions, etc – dress accordingly.
We are hoping for favourable weather but should temperatures be too cold (-23 Celsius or less, also factoring in severe wind chill), than this event may be cancelled. Please take note of the required items and come prepared for snow and the cold.
**If you choose to drink at the lounge, please drink responsibly**
