Itinerary:
Have you been wondering what winter camping/backpacking is like? Well bring your snowshoes and your backpacking gear and lets head out for a short 3km trek into Point campground in Kananaskis this Remembrance Day Weekend. We will be testing out our winter gear during this shoulder season event and learning what is needed or not. Backpacking experience would be an asset for this trip but is not required.
  • Mountain Equipment Co-op provides reasonably priced rentals for some needed items, such as a backpacks and snowshoes: MEC RENTALS
  • A great online resource for winter camping can be found here: WINTER CAMPING AND BACKPACKING TIPS

  • A 4 season tent is not a requirement for this trip. If you have extra tarps bring those along for ground cover to keep your 3 season tent dry. I would also recommend bringing extra padding to insulate from the cooler ground. This will be an opportunity to test the equipment you have. Your main objective will be to stay warm and dry.

Carpool location: Meet at Starbucks near the Hamptons on November 11, 2016 at 5:30am for a 6:00am departure. We will decide carpool arrangements on location. Please be prepared to drive. Payments made in person at carpool.

Day one (Friday): Moose Mountain near Bragg Creek up to fire lookout (14.6 km round trip with 470 meter elevation gain). We will spend roughly 5 to 6 hours doing this ascent. Icy sections are expected so microspikes are required. Depending on the time we will either visit Bragg Creek for a quick bite to eat in the early morning or mid afternoon. We will choose to eat at Cinnamon Spoon (1 White Ave., 403-949-4110) or Creekers Bistro (20 White Ave., 403-949-3361) in Bragg Creek.

Night one (Friday):PLAN A: Backpack 3km into Point Campground after visiting Barrier Lake Visitor Centre, if enough day light still remains. PLAN B: Stay at a drive-in campground called: Three Sisters in Bow Valley Provincial Park. It is first come first serve during November, and check- in is after 2pm. The cost per site is $26 per night. There are fire pits, firewood for sale, shelters for picnics, water pumps, and pit/vault toilets.

Day two (Saturday): Backpack hike into Point Campground (3km) and snowshoeing. We will hike from Point Campground and then snowshoe/hike Rawson Lake. Distance from point: 18km roundtrip. Lake Height: 2025 m. Elevation gain: 300 m. Time: 8 hrs

Night two (Saturday): Point Campground: Cost of backcountry permit is $12/person per night. We will purchase the permits the day prior, at one of the visitor centres in the Kananaskis area (Barrier Lake Visitor Centre). Site 19 is secluded and overlooks the lake. There are fire pits with firewood, secure food storage and pit/vault toilets.

Day three (Sunday): Drive to Chester Lake parking lot: Lake height 2200 meters, elevation gain 310 meters, round trip distance 8 kms. This is the most popular snowshoeing destination in the Kananaskis region.
