The Cooking Lake / Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area is a large area located to the east of Edmonton, with an extensive network of scenic trails - see the info below:

Cooking Lake / Blackfoot info

The EOC has not started many hikes from the northernmost trailhead (Blackfoot Lake) in the past, so we will head there for up to 3-4 hours or so of exploring!
My intention is to do a different route from the one we did on our previous visit on June 15th, checking out more of the NE part of the park.

The Blackfoot Lake trailhead is accessed off Hwy 16 (Yellowhead Highway), and is located a very short distance to the east of the Ukranian Village turnoff - it is clearly signposted.
As soon as you pass the Ukranian Village turnoff, be ready to turn right into the access road (Range Road 195) to the trailhead - it comes up fairly quickly afterwards (approx 800m after the Ukranian Village, acoording to Google Maps).

Journey time from the carpool location (Bonnie Doon) is approx 1 hour each way. If you are carpooling, we will meet at Bonnie Doon at 9:50am for a 10:00am departure.
We have to assume that traffic will be bad on the east side of the city due to roadworks etc, so we can't wait for late arrivals!

If you are meeting at the Blackfoot Lake trailhead, meet at 11:00am.
There will be a carpool available from Edmonton if desired - meet at the parking lot for the Bonnie Doon Mall (section in front of Safeway - facing Whyte Avenue) at 9:50am for a 10:00am departure.
At the carpool and the trailhead, I will be driving a grey Hyundai wagon, and wearing a yellow EOC cap so you can spot me.

Bring sufficient water/snacks, and suitable clothing/footwear for anything the weather might throw at us! (including waterproofs...)
Bug spray and walking poles are recommended.

IMPORTANT NOTE #1: although dogs are permitted on this event, please note that the Cooking Lake / Blackfoot PRA state that pets should be kept on a leash at all times.

IMPORTANT NOTE #2: keep an eye on your emails and the weather forecast leading up to this event, as it may be postponed in the event of heavy rain and/or thunderstorms.

A short distance beyond Elk Island and the turnoff for the Ukranian Village, you will see a sign for the Blackfoot Lake trailhead on the right (south).
Follow this road (Range Road 195) to the parking lot.

Carpool Cost: The event coordinator(s) will help you to arrange a centralized carpool if you require it, but it's not guaranteed. Please DO NOT pay your driver en route. Passengers will pay the coordinator, and he/she will distribute the money to the carpool drivers. SO PLEASE BRING CASH!!! Approximate vehicle expense for this event is $31.90 (calculated at total Km * $0.29, effective Thursday, April 18, 2024). This is based on $0.09/Km for maintenance, plus current gas price divided by 9. This cost will be multiplied by the number of carpooled cars, and divided by the number of carpool participants.
