Itinerary:
Join us for a relaxing weekend at Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park, which is located approximately 3 hours north of Edmonton. We will be staying at The Nest, a fully outfitted cabin located within the park at The Boreal Centre for Bird Conservation, an educational and research facility that is used to study boreal birds on their breeding grounds. The Nest features a fully equipped kitchen, potable water, 2 bathrooms with showers, laundry facilities, a private deck, gas barbecue, fire pit and indoor wood-burning fireplace (with supplied firewood). The EOC has booked the entire cabin for the weekend (The Nest sleeps up to 10 people).

Our stay coincides with the Annual Songbird Festival at the Boreal Centre for Bird Conservation. There will be an early morning pancake breakfast on Saturday May 31st, guided hikes in the area and chances to tour the banding lab and attend special workshops at the Boreal Centre for Bird Conservation. On the morning of Sunday June 1st, an annual 5K/10K Bird Fun Trail Run/Walk will be held. Since we will be staying right at the Boreal Centre, all of these events will be (literally) in our backyard.

Away from the Boreal Centre for Bird Conservation, a number of hiking trails, of varying difficulty, are located within Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park and/or in the Slave Lake area. The most difficult of these is a short but steep hike to the summit of Marten Mountain, which rises 450 m above the lake. Devonshire Beach, located near to where we will be staying, is considered by many to be the best beach in Alberta. Devonshire Beach features thick, rolling dunes and a pristine white sandy beach.

On Saturday evening we will organize a potluck.

To register for this event, please put your name on the waiting list and submit a payment to the EOC as soon as possible. We will add people to the event in the order that they commit to the trip by paying for their spot. We absolutely require a minimum of eight people for this event to go ahead.

Required Items to Bring:
Food/drink for the weekend (note: grocery stores are available in Slave Lake, 15 minutes away)
Sleeping bag
Pillow
Suitable clothing / footwear for weather conditions!
Bug spray / sunscreen
Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.
Additional lawn chairs or camping chairs (some outside lawn chairs are available, but we don't know how many)
$$ for special events, visits to the Boreal Centre's exhibit gallery and gift shop, etc.

How to Get There:
Event Directions:Please note: If you search Google Maps for the location of the Boreal Centre for Bird Conservation, it will direct you to an address located within the town of Slave Lake. This is NOT the location. The Boreal Centre (and The Nest) are accessed from Highway 88, from a signed turnoff located 19 km north of the town of Slave Lake.
