Itinerary:
** UPDATE ** I have booked four tent pads at Jacques Lake for June 7th, which means that the maximum group size for this event is 8 people.

Join me for an overnight hike to Jacques Lake in Jasper National Park. As far as backpacking trips go, this one is relatively easy. We will hike 12.2 km each way along a moderately flat trail through a scenic mountain valley. The trail has 90 m of elevation gain followed by 45 m of elevation loss). To quote one hiking guide, "The trail to Jacques Lake is about as level as this sentence." However, easy doesn't have to mean uninteresting: the trail travels through a narrow mountain valley, skirting around four lakes and crossing a watershed divide. The book "Don't Waste Your Time in the Canadian Rockies" (Kathy and Craig Copeland, 2004) ranks this trail as a three- boot trail (Outstanding) in their Shoulder Season trips list. The low elevation of this trail makes it a really good option for an early season trip. To have some idea of what the scenery looks like, have a look at the photos posted by a hiker from Toronto who hiked this route.

We can leave Friday night (June 6) and camp in or near Jasper, or Saturday morning (June 7). When you sign up, please let me know which you would prefer. If we do camp in/near Jasper on June 6th, I will make a separate booking at a campground and request payment separately from everybody who intends to camp overnight prior to the hike.

I would like to plan a meeting for approximately 1 week prior to the trip where we can discuss logistics and carpool options/arrangements. The date and time of that meeting will be announced at a later date.

In any case, all hikers will need to be at the Jacques Lake trailhead by 12:00 noon on Saturday. We camp in the Jacques Lake campground Saturday night. Sunday morning we will pack up and hike to the vehicles. We should be out by around 2:00 pm, and back in Edmonton by 7:00 pm.

When you sign up, please email me to answer the following questions:

  • 1. Do you have a backcountry tent that can fit two people, which you are willing to bring along for this event?
  • 2. Do you have any preferences for tenting partners?
  • 3. Do you have a backcountry stove?
  • 4. Do you have any other supplies for a backpacking trip that you are able to bring along? (e.g. water filters).
  • 5. Would you prefer to travel to Jasper on Friday evening (camping overnight nearby) or early on Saturday morning? (Note: arrangements and payment for any overnight camping on the Friday evening will be made separately prior to the event.)

    PAYMENT NOTES:

This is a first-paid, first-get-on event. Payment is due immediately upon registration, or you will be moved to the waiting list. If you didn't pay and someone else on the waitlist did, they will get on before you! Any overbooking will be fully refunded.
