Itinerary:

I would like to spend about 3-4 hours in Elk Island National Park snowshoeing the Amisk Wuche and Beaver Pond Trails.

Below is some more info about the two trails:
- Amisk Wuche Trail (2.5km, 1-1.5 hours) (#5 on the map above) - Amisk Wuche is the Cree Indian name for Beaver Hills. The trail winds through aspen, birch and spruce stands. A series of floating boardwalks takes the trail across small kettle lakes and beaver ponds. Excellent snowshoe trail.
- Beaver Pond Trail (3.5km, 1-2 hours) (#7 on the map above) - Trappers had completely eliminated beaver from the park area by the mid 1800s. Park staff successfully re- introduced them in the park in the 1940s. This trail is characterized by evidence of beaver activity near the trailhead. Lodges that are overgrown with vegetation are abandoned. The open aspen forest and sedge meadows along this trail are ideal for birdwatching in summer and observing large mammals grazing in winter.

Please pack a lunch or sufficient snacks as we will eat lunch either at one of the trailheads or along the trail.

If you don't have snowshoes, you will need to rent some in advance. They are available for rent at MEC (Mountain Equipment Co-op) and Totem Outdoor Outfitters.

** If there is not sufficient snow cover on Sunday, then we will just do a hike instead on the same trails. With this in mind, please ensure you also have suitable footwear for hiking in the winter, plus ice cleats/grips.

** CARPOOLERS: Meetup at 10:00am at the Belvedere LRT Station. We will leave there at 10:15am at the latest. See below for more info.
