  • It is too early to say, but it is quite possible to have snow in the mountains by early October. In the event of heavy snow, we might need to changed the scheduled plans and either go to another destination or do the hikes with snowshoes/crampons. The final plans will be discussed in the mandatory pre-trip meeting.
  • Our hiking pace will be MODERATE (no slowpokes, no speed demons)
  • Old Goat Glacier trail ( Distance: 8kms, elevation gain: 650m )
  • Chester Lake ( Distance: 12kms, elevation gain: 400m )
  • Group hiking in effect in the area due to bear activity. If you are unable to respect this guideline, refrain from signing up.
  • The plan is to enjoy a great potluck, the beautiful scenery, the great company, and the photo opportunities while having FUN so bring your cheerful personalities along.
  • Your coordinator has not been on these hikes before, but he has the GPS tracks. Please be patient.
  • This is a first-paid, first-get-on event. Payment is due immediately upon registration, or you will be moved to the waiting list. If you didn't pay and someone else on the waitlist did, they will get on before you! Any overbooking will be fully refunded.

ITINERARY:

Friday - We will leave Edmonton in the afternoon Friday, October 1st, 2010, and head to Canmore. We will be staying at The Hostel Bear for two nights. Since our Saturday hike is not too difficult, we don't have to go to bed early and there will be some time to party.

We will be staying in a co-ed dorm rooms. Bedding will be provided and sleeping bags are NOT permitted. There is a well equipped kitchen with appliances, pots and pans, dishes to cook your own food for the weekend. There is running water, hot showers and electricity in this hostel.

Saturday - We will leave the hostel early in the morning and head to Spray Lakes following the Smith-Dorrian Road. The trailhead to the Old Goat Glacier is about 1.5km West of the campground road.

The hike is only about 30 minutes away from Canmore and entirely on an adequate trail, which is rewarding from the start. The short, forested approach is mostly creek side. We will soon burst into a basin enjoying rapidly expanding views of Spray Lakes Reservoir and the Three Sisters Massif. Once we surpass the trees and enter the canyon, the crest of a moraine offers a gentle ascent probing the realm of rock and ancient ice.

After our hike, we will head back to Canmore, relax, and have a potluck supper. These are always a great mixer to kick off the festivities on Saturday night. Please bring along something to share with your comrades.

Sunday - Sunday morning we will check out and leave the hostel early and head to Chester Lake. This popular trail leads up through forest to lovely Chester Lake, one of the most rewarding destinations in the area. The grade is steady uphill, and the first 2.7 km on old logging roads are open to cyclists. This trail is appropriate for both hiking and snowshoeing.

About an hour from the trailhead, the grade eases, and spruce forest gives way to larch trees and hummucky meadows. Soon Chester Lake is in view, backdropped by the tilted rocky layers on Mt. Chester. For those so inclined, a rough trail circles the lake, offering perspectives on the lake and mountains.

After the hike, we will go for an early dinner (there is an awesome pizza place in Canmore) and afterwards, we will depart Canmore and head back to Edmonton with great memories and photos.
