Itinerary:
This is a hostel based day hiking trip. We will leave Edmonton Friday afternoon approx 1:00 pm, (TBC), and drive (6 hrs) to Field, just past Lake Louise, where we will stay at the Fireweed Hostel or if there is no room when you book, the Lake Louise Hostel for 2 nights and do 2 day hikes. Fireweed is a smaller hostel, 16 persons max, so you must call early to reserve.

PLEASE CALL THE HOSTEL TO RESERVE YOUR OWN SPOT.

The Plain of the 6 Glaciers is a Great Hike that offers some fantastic views of Banff Park and Lake Louise. The first 2.5 km of the hike serves as a good warmup, this stretch is essentially flat, and can be crowded but once we get past the lake, the crowds thin out. The trail then runs along the delta formed at the west end of Lake Louise where the routse starts to climb. The slide-created meadows are home to many mammals, including hoary marmots. After some switch backs, we start to climb through the larches and the moraine, and arrive at the Plain of Six Glaciers Teahouse. Arrival at the teahouse reveals the complement of six glaciers that gives it the name, on Mountains Aberdeen, Lefroy, and Victoria. You reach the zone of the subalpine larch at the teahouse. In Autumn, the needles of the larche trees turn a brilliant golden hue before dropping off, so we may see some brilliant colors.

Distance: 5.5 km (3.4 mi) To the teahouse– Lake Louise to Plain of Six Glaciers teahouse, plus the hike to look at the glaciers after the teahouse, which is an additional 1.5 km. TOTAL DISTANCE 14 KM ROUND TRIP Elevation Gain: 370 m (1215 ft) Maximum Elevation: 2100 m (6890 ft)

We will leave the trailhead at the northeast corner of Lake Louise where we pass in front of the Chateau Lake. We will follow the west side of the lake, on flat ground then start to climb, to the Plain of Six Glaciers teahouse (2100 m). After a short hike along the moraine, to see the glaciers we will come back to the teahouse where we will have lunch and enjoy the view before hiking back down. The teahouse has soup sandwiches, apple pie and tea. But bring your own snacks too in case they run low.

We will go back to the Fireweed hostel to enjoy a BBQ or your choice of supper, in the self catered kitchen of the hostel.

Early Sunday we pack up and drive toward Whiskeyjack hostel, where we will do the 11 km Yoho Lake loop. Behind the hostel, there is a moderately steep set of switch backs getting up to the ridge, but if you have been doing the conditioning hikes, you will be fine. A series of forested swichbacks leads us to Yoho Lake and offeres escellent views of Takakkaw Falls. As we head up the mossy trail, pink mountian heather, sunny globeflowers and yellow glacier lilies add spashes of color. Up along the ridge we will enjoy marvelous views of Yoho Valley, and walk to Yoho Lake where we will stop and have lunch before heading along the upper trail across, finish the loop and head down. The elevation gain is 360m.

Then we will drive back to Edmonton. It will be a fairly long day, so will require that we be up and going fairly early on Sunday. 7:00 am-ish.
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me. Email is preferred.

-Friday afternoon we will assemble at our carpool location (TBD), and head out to Lake Louise. We will be staying at the hostel for Friday and Saturday nights.
