Itinerary:
This is a wonderful backpacking trip into a remote part of Willmore Wilderness Park. The scenery is breathtaking and rewarding.

Please note -- this is a challenging 60km trip involving significant elevation gain and a river fording on the Wildhay River (sandals/booties required) -- you must be in excellent physical health and be a strong hiker/backpacker to register for this event.

The plan is to leave Edmonton on Friday at 9AM and then arrive at Rock Lake in Willmore Wilderness Park around 1pm. We will then strap on our backpacks and hike in approximately 3 hours to a remote campground, where we will set up camp and have supper.
At 8AM sharp the next morning, we will begin our full-day, 25km hike (roundtrip) to Bury Ridge. We'll have lunch on the Ridge, rehydrate, enjoy the scenery (and hopefully sunshine), then make our way back to the campground via a route which will require some bushwhacking (no trail). Once back at camp, we'll then have supper and a relaxing evening. The morning will see us hike back to Rock Lake, and then drive out to Miette Hotsprings for a well-deserved soak. Afterwards, we'll head into Hinton for supper and then make our way home.

Pretrip meeting to discuss the weekend and tenting partners will be Aug 17 at 7pm (location TBA)

This trip will be cancelled in the event of general rain but will continue if the forecast is for showers.

Required Items to Bring:
tent, sleeping bag, mattress pad, earplugs, food, $$ for carpool, park entrance and camping, good hiking boots, sandals/booties for river crossing, bathing suit for the hotsprings
Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.
-bearspray
-sunglasses
-deodorant
-mosquito repellant
-gaiters for bushwhacking and general hiking,
-toque and gloves

How to Get There:
Event Directions:Hwy 16 to Hinton, continue west of Hinton for 5km, then turn north on Hwy 40 (Alaska Hwy) for approximately 40km to the Rock Lake turnoff. Turn left and follow the gravel road for 31km to Rock Lake. Exercise caution while driving on this road watching out for wildlife, logging trucks and oil workers. Continue past Rock Lake up the hill to the Rock Lake Staging Area parking lot (end of the road). This is the trailhead for our hike.

Carpool Cost: The event coordinator(s) will help you to arrange a centralized carpool if you require it, but it's not guaranteed. Please DO NOT pay your driver en route. Passengers will pay the coordinator, and he/she will distribute the money to the carpool drivers. SO PLEASE BRING CASH!!! Approximate vehicle expense for this event is $163.20 (calculated at total Km * $0.20, effective Wednesday, September 08, 2010).
