Our first ranch weekend was fantastic. We had a beautiful but cool sunny day on Saturday for the first group to get their feet wet (literally!) horseback riding. It was the horses' first day out on the trails this year and some of them were a little feisty. It made for some great tales around the campfire that evening, including the little dip one rider got in the creek. The potluck and barbecue was excellent and we were treated to a northern lights display once it got dark. We played 'I never' and perhaps learned a little too much about each other. Lesson learned. We decided to give someone the nickname 'Squeaky' for being squeaky clean (you know who you are.....), and identified two fire *ahem* 'worshippers' and a 'tick magnet'. (No, no one got ticks). The next day the second group went riding and there were some more horse antics, resulting in even more fireside story fodder. The hiking in Sandhills Wildlands Park was indeed sandy, making it a good choice for this usually muddy time of year. The non- riding groups hiked the old Klondike Trail, encountering a child's grave from the 1800's and the ruin of a trapper's cabin. All in all it was a great group and great time, and we look forward to doing it again soon!
