Itinerary: | |||||||
We will be fast hiking some new hidden gem single
track trails in East Millwoods Mill Creek Ravine.
From 17 Street to 50 street and back in a loop and
switchbacks of various connected trails in old
growth forest. There are lots of hill trails,
stairs, and single
track trails in Millwoods East Mill Creek Ravine.
These are trails that only locals know about, and
are way off the radar for most Edmontonians and
other outdoor groups. This maze of single track
trails have been scouted out in advance of this
event to ensure we wont get lost on the forested
trails and meandering creek trails.
We will meet at 10:30 AM at the The Meadows District Park (directions below). This walk will be at a brisk pace. I have classed this hike as "moderate to difficult" because there are a lot of steep sections where the trail rises and descends (including a tough section of switchbacks), which will prove challenging to many of us, but we will prevail! *This is approximately a 14 km hike, which is great training for some upcoming long hikes we will do in the River Valley!
Bring some snacks or sugar if you need
some to keep your energy going! Please note that proper hiking footwear with good support and grip is essential, as some sections are steep and challenging, especially if underfoot conditions are wet and/or slippery.
Also please note that this is a group hike -
therefore "superfast hikers" should be prepared
to wait for the group as a whole throughout the
whole hike. Similarly - "less than superfast hikers" - please find the time to get some training hikes in before this one, so that you are not "caught cold" doing this one! In summary, this is not an easy hike - there are lots of significant gradients throughout the whole hike and you will get a good workout! However, it is a very scenic area and well worth visiting. Donate to the EOC!We
are
requesting $2.00
per event in person, or our suggested annual
donation of
$20 be done
electronically. "I walk all the River Valley parks and this section of the Mill Creek Ravine in Mill Woods one is my favourites; even though it’s not connected with the more well know sections near the River Valley. These dirt trails are quite isolated and it is hard to believe that you are in the middle of a residential area in the City. There are nice wooden bridges crisscrossing the creek and you could see a fair amount of wildlife there too. I often see squirrels and chipmunks, lots of birds; the occasional deer and owl too". ~ Mark G | |||||||
