|Sustainability Awareness Week at the
University of Alberta takes places this year
from October 16-20. During this week, a number
of events will be organized across the UofA
I am planning to attend three events taking place on Tuesday October 17:
We will meet at 4:45 PM inside the Good Earth Cafe (8623 112 Street), and from there will make our way to ECHA for the first of these events. If you cannot make it to the first of these events, but would like to join the group later, that's no problem. Please let me know if you will be coming later. As well, please let me know if you are unfamiliar with the UofA campus and would like directions for finding parking, or finding the buildings where these events will be taking place.
Here is a bit more information about these events:
Leave No Trace: How to Keep Our Wild Spaces Wild
Edmonton Clinic Health Academy (ECHA L1-430)
5 to 5:50 p.m.
In this interactive workshop, learn how to interact responsibly with natural spaces, and how to practice leave-no-trace camping. Learn seven key principles for camping, along with unique ideas for limiting waste, how to interact with animals, and the consequences of leaving more than just footprints in nature.
A goal of this workshop is to learn from one another on how we can strive to be better environmental stewards when interacting with protected areas. We will discuss how we as humans interact with the natural world, and how by altering our behaviours we can preserve these natural areas for the future.
Complimentary whole food and healthy snacks included.
Organizers: University of Alberta Outdoors Club, Sustain SU
Film: CPAWS presents Last Stand: The Vanishing Caribou Rainforest
Central Academic Building (CAB 265)
6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
CPAWS Northern Alberta is proud to host the first Edmonton screening of Last Stand: The Vanishing Caribou Rainforest. “This film is a cinematic journey into the tragically threatened world of endangered mountain caribou, their home in the world’s largest remaining inland temperate rainforest, and the critical human choices that will ultimately decide the fate of this stunning ecosystem. With the failure of agencies in the U.S. and Canada to regulate industrial resource extraction effectively, honor the treaty rights of indigenous peoples, and protect the integrity of the natural systems of this region, this film gives voice to First Nations, scientists, foresters, conservationists, and recreationists attempting to chart a new path forward before it is too late.”
While this film is set in BC it has clear parallels with the plight of Boreal Woodland caribou in northern Alberta. CPAWS will also be on hand to answer questions about caribou conservation and actions that can be taken to help these iconic animals.
Organizer: Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society
University of Alberta Observatory (CCIS 5-240)
8 to 9 p.m.
Join us to view the stars using powerful telescopes at the University of Alberta’s own astronomical observatory. Also, learn about light pollution, a major concern for astronomical research as it relies upon dark zones for observing the faintest objects in the universe.
Organizer: University of Alberta Department of Physics – Observatory
