Itinerary:
Once dubbed "the most famous man in the world", Charlie Chaplin has long been recognized as one of the pre-eminent icons of both comedy and cinema. From 1914 until 1967, Chaplin wrote, directed, produced, and starred in over 80 films, quickly advancing from basic slapstick to a unique comic style - immaculately constructed, deeply human, and always hilarious.

Metro Cinema is proud to be screening the full touring programme from Janus, which is a retrospective of Chaplin's films (both features and shorts) from 1918 to 1957, including such masterpieces as The Kid, The Circus, City Lights, and Modern Times. Don't miss this rare opportunity to experience Chaplin's genius on the big screen! All of the films are new 35mm prints.

This evening, they're presenting Modern Times. The opening sequence of Chaplin's last silent film features the most hilariously literal visualization of his one-man-against-the-machine formula as the Tramp, employed as a factory worker, gets sucked into the gears of a giant assembly line, tightening screws as he goes. Chaplin's farewell to the silent cinema and the character that made him famous, Modern Times follows the Tramp as he attempts to simply hold a steady job and win the heart of a beautiful young orphan—which leads to him being repeatedly fired, arrested, branded as a communist agitator and pursued as a fugitive. Tellingly, though, Chaplin ends on a note of relative triumph: another long walk into the distance, but this time with company along the way.

Meet near the box office (look for the yellow EOC volunteer cap) between 6:40 and 6:50. Film starts at 7:00.
