Join me at the University
of Alberta Observatory, where we will learn
about astronomy and hopefuly (if the weather is
clear) have a chance to take a closer look at some
of the stars.
The U of A observatory is located within the
Centennial Centre for Interdisciplinary Sciences
(CCIS) building. The CCIS building is
located at the north end of the University of
Alberta campus (near Saskatchewan Drive). The
observatory, which is run by the University of
Alberta Department of Physics, is located at the
west end of the 5th floor of the CCIS building.
Throughout the fall and winter, the observatory is
regularly open to the public, generally for an
hour every
Thursday evening. There is no cost to visit the
observatory, although depending on you travel
plans you may have to pay a small
amount to cover parking costs at the university.
Please see below (under "Directions") for
suggestions on where to park - your best option
for parking is Lot V (accessed from 116 Street).
The viewing session this coming Thursday (September 11) will begin with a short public talk, "The Colours of Astronomy", presented by Dr. Gregory Sivakoff. We'll meet in the main floor atrium of the CCIS building at its west end at 8:45. You will see a large hanging model of the Solar System. From there, we'll take the elevator to the 5th floor to reach the observatory.

Event Directions: | ![]() | The CCIS building is located at the north end of
the University of Alberta campus. The CCIS
building is adjacent to the Biological Sciences
building (to its north), the National Institute
for Nanotechnology (NINT) building (to its west),
the Earth Sciences building (to its east) and the
Chemistry Building, Assiniboia Building and
University Quad (to its south). View Parking Locations - Main Campus in a larger map The best parking option is Lot V, a surface parking lot located to the north-west of CCIS along 116 Street. Lot V is located directly to the north and adjacent to the Windsor Car Park parking garage. Evening parking in Lot V is capped at $2, while evening parking within the Windsor Car Park is capped at $5. You will also find parking meters along Saskatchewan Drive, but unlike the rest of the city please note that there is a charge for evening parking in front of parking meters throughout the University of Alberta campus during the evening! Parking meters on campus charge $1 per 15 minutes. The closest parking lot to the CCIS is Lot E (not shown on the map above, but located along Saskatchewan Drive east of the Biological Sciences building). There is no evening cap on parking charges in Lot E. Parking rates are $1.25 per 15 minutes. Alternatively, you can also bike or take the LRT to reach the CCIS building. Bicycle racks are located along the south end of the CCIS building (adjacent to the University Quad). It's about a 5 minute walk from the University LRT Station to reach the CCIS building. I'm highly familiar with the University of Alberta campus, so please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about how to find your way to the CCIS building. | ![]()
