Itinerary:
We will meet at the Victoria Park parking lot in the river valley and leave for the hike promptly at 9:30 AM . We will begin by climbing up a flight of stairs to cross the Menzies pedestrian bridge, and proceed west along the river below the University. We will cross to the north bank at Groat Road and follow the paved path down to MacKinnon Ravine, climbing out at 142nd Street and following Summit Drive to where we can tie into the river valley trail network again. We will continue to Laurier Park by the Valley Zoo, where we will pause for lunch. Make sure you bring a snack or sandwich and plenty of fluids. Crossing the bridge at the Buena Vista off-leash area, we will begin our return, following the trail back along the river by Hawrelak Park, re-crossing at Groat Road, and returning to our vehicles at Victoria Park. We expect to be back at 2:00 or 2:30PM.

If we are moving quickly and the bridge is open to pedestrian traffic, we might also have the option of continuing along the river to cross the Quesnel Bridge before starting our return, and including sections of the river valley trails by the Whitemud Equestrian Centre. We will make that decision when we reach Laurier Park.

The estimated time and distance of this hike puts it into the ‘Moderate to Difficult’ category. The hike is expected to take between four and five hours and will cover some 16-18 km. The speed will be between three and four km per hour, which is reasonably fast; if you prefer to amble along at a gentler pace, please consider a different hike. This is not a nature walk.

Required Items to Bring:
This hike will proceed rain or shine. While some of the trails are paved, others are dirt or gravel and can be slippery, especially when wet. Please select proper footwear, and clothing appropriate for the weather.
