| This is a trip reserved for experienced hikers only. While these are hikes, they are to mountain summits and as such, requires steep hiking so please sign up accordingly.
This will be a car camping trip. We will be camping at the Boulton Creek campground near Kananaskis Lakes. This is a full service campground with flush toilets, running water, showers even, and fire pits. Firewood will cost extra for those wishing a campfire. We will spend two nights here and do two day trips in the area. I have reserved two sites next to each other. Each site may accomadate two 2-man size tents. So each person must share a tent with a partner. Please indicate when signing up if you have a tent to share or need to share? I will set you up with a tent partner, preferably of the same sex but no guarantees. As far as food goes. Breakfast for two mornings. Lunch and snacks for the trail. Supper for one night at the campground (Friday), and a dinner on the drive back to Edmonton, most likely in Cochrane. Do not plan on a communal dinner for this trip. If you have a camping stove and can share, please let me know too. I will be using a back country stove.
Thursday. We will leave Edmonton at 4pm. We will drive south to Kananaskis, to the Boulton Creek front country campground. We will try and have dinner along the way so either bring a bag dinner or money for a quick stop along the highway. We do have a long drive with a late day start so I do want to be quick in getting to Kananaskis. It is about a 5 hour drive. We will set up tents and for those who so desire, may go to sleep or stay up.
Friday: Snow Peak (2789m). We will have our breakfast and we WILL be leaving our campsite at 9:30am!! I will enforce this departure as our day will be several hours so plan your wake up and breakfast accordingly. We will drive up the Smith Dorrien road to the Burstall Pass trailhead. We will hike up the Burstall Pass trail to the pass of the same name. From the pass we will hike/scramble up the SE ridge to the summit of Snow Peak. Snow Peak should be mostly a steep hike from the pass with some very easy scrambling near the top. Here are the stats for Snow Peak: distance of 19km return and elevation gain of about 880m. Your co-ordinator has been to Burstall Pass before but has not yet been able to ascend Snow Peak. We will return to the campground for dinner and an evening of good company.
Saturday: Mt Lipsett (2580m) We will break camp at 9:30am and drive a short distance south on hwy 40 towards Highwood Pass. We will hike up Mt Lipsett using the description in Daffern's guide book, "Kananaskis Country Trail Guide Vol 2". For reference it is page 19. It is about 6km to the summit and about 718m in elevation. We will drive back to Edmonton afterwards.
