Itinerary:
Elk Island is a beautiful wilderness area just outside of Edmonton. It is home to hundreds of deer, bison, moose, small animals and, of course, elk. The park is large enough to support camping, hiking, x-country skiing, wildlife viewing and many other activities. Please join me for a few hours away from all the noise, traffic, and concrete of the city. If we're lucky, maybe we'll even see some wild animals. For more information, see the park's website or wikipedia. A map of the park is available here.

We will meet in the LRT station parking lot and leave for Elk Island at 10:30, arriving by approximately 11:15. We will be hiking the Hayburger trail, although depending on trail conditions we may switch to the Shirley Lake trail. Both are between 12 and 13 km (3-4 hours) through rolling hills and low areas. At present, trail conditions are a combination of snow, ice, and mud, with areas of clear trail. Waterproof, winter footwear (not snowshoes) is advised.

As always, dress for the weather.
