Jasper - Spring Weekend Hostel and Hiking! (4/22/2016)

Itinerary:
PLAN
Leave Edmonton Friday ~ Early afternoon if you can (there can be later carpoolers if needed) and head to Jasper. We will have an optional (if needed) pre-trip meeting on Tuesday, April 12th at 6:30 PM at Block 1912 on Whyte Ave. (10361 - 82 Ave.) to discuss carpool arrangements, hikes or if you have any other questions. We will stay at the HI-Jasper (Whistler Hostel) in Jasper.
NOTE: YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MAKING YOUR OWN HOSTEL BED BOOKING. CALL 1.866.762.4122 to reserve a bed.

FRIDAY
Meet at carpool location. Leave for Jasper and check in at hostel. Can do dinner in town, or at hostel, depending on when we get there.

SATURDAY
Breakfast - at hostel
Lunch - pack a snack, sandwich etc... Supper - We can have a potluck at the hostel if everyone wants, or order pizza & salad & eat it at the hostel. Evening - free time - options include: Driving to Pyramid lake to look at the stars; swimming in town, going to the movie theater, walk around town, relax, sleep, board games,….

SUNDAY
Breakfast - at hostel
9:00am - head out for a short hike, before heading back to Edmonton

This will depend on group consensus, weather, how are feet are, or how early we want to be back to Edmonton.
Can also stop at Miette Hot Springs, located ~60km east of Jasper, for a relaxing soak!!

Then from Miette, head back to Edmonton.

THERE ARE LOTS OF HIKES TO CHOOSE FROM. PLAN IS FOR SATURDAY TO BE A FULL DAY OF HIKING, TRAIL TO BE CHOSEN DEPENDING ON CONDITIONS. I WILL BE CHECKING WITH THE PARKS STAFF JUST PRIOR TO THE WEEKEND TO DETERMINE THE BEST HIKES TO DO.

POSSIBLE HIKES

Kinney Lake (9km return, 130m elevation gain, 3 hours return) - approx. 84km west of Jasper in Mt. Robson Provincial Park in B.C. The Kinney Lake hike forms the first 4.5 km (one way) of the Berg Lake backpacking route. We will stop at the Kinney Lake Hut for lunch. The trail will take us through a unique rainforest that is created from a unique microclimate that forms near Mt. Robson.

-Valley of Five Lakes (there is a 4.6km loop, about 30m elevation gain, 2-3 hours) - approx. 11km south of Jasper.
- Hike at Maligne Canyon (7.4km round trip, 125m elevation gain, 2 hours) - not far from the hostel.
Option
Sulphur Skyline- From Miette Hot springs parking lot, hike to the Sulphur Skyline trail. (8km round trip, 700m elevation gain, 3-4 hours return). The Sulphur Skyline trail takes us to a ridge overlooking several remote wilderness valleys.

SHORT WALKS IF WE HAVE TIME
Horseshoe falls, its a nice short walk around the lake, pretty walk, about 2 kms total.
Athabasca Falls, and many others to choose from.

ACCOMMODATION:
HI Jasper Hostel is located just south of Jasper on the road to the sky tram. Drive 4 km south of Jasper on Hwy 93, turn right on Skytram Road and follow for 3km. HI-Jasper is located on the left-hand side of the road.
Details of hostel: Four simple private rooms, a female and mixed shared dorm are available in the hostel. When we say shared we mean shared! Experience our 40 bed mixed dorm and enjoy a sort of vintage hostelling adventure. The beds will be in the shared dorm rooms. We do have purified water for cooking, a refrigerators, stoves and lights. Click HOSTEL for more info. about the hostel.

Hiking gear - shoes/boots, poles, clothing, jackets, ICE GRIPS! etc.
National Park Pass (if you have one)
**Hostelling International Membership Card (if you have one. If you do not have an HI membership card, you will be charged an additional $12 on arrival at the hostel)**
Camera

Food for dinners
Food for breakfasts on Saturday, Sunday

DRINKING WATER is available at the hostel
$$ for meals if you want to eat in town on Saturday, souvenirs, etc.

Carpool Cost: The event coordinator(s) will help you to arrange a centralized carpool if you require it, but it's not guaranteed. Please DO NOT pay your driver en route. Passengers will pay the coordinator, and he/she will distribute the money to the carpool drivers. SO PLEASE BRING CASH!!! Approximate vehicle expense for this event is $290.00 (calculated at total Km * $0.29, effective Wednesday, April 24, 2024). This is based on $0.09/Km for maintenance, plus current gas price divided by 9. This cost will be multiplied by the number of carpooled cars, and divided by the number of carpool participants.

Notes:
Payment must be received before the cut off date. The event is first paid, first on the event.
