Itinerary:
It’s a landmark on Edmonton’s skyline, and the workplace of our provincial politicians, but how much do you know about Alberta’s legislature, and our system of government?

We will take a 45 minute tour of the Legislature Building, which will be led by a Heritage Interpreter who works at the legislature. The topics to be covered during the tour will include the levels of government, roles of the Lieutenant Governor, Premier, Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly, a brief political history of Alberta, parliamentary traditions and ceremonies, as well as the art and architecture of the building itself.

After our tour, we will take a walk around the legislature grounds, having a look at the large number of memorials and monuments on the grounds. This portion of our visit will be self-guided (we will stay together as a group, but won’t have a guide from the legislature with us). We will also pay a visit to the new Visitor Centre, which is located at the Edmonton Federal Building. At the Pehonan Theater, which is located within the Visitor Centre, we will watch an 11-minute film about the history of Alberta. The film, which is shown in a circular theatre with 12 projectors, is a new 4-D production that features music by Edmonton’s 100 Mile House and aboriginal musician Sarah Pocklington. This film, which has only been on display since July 1st, is described as quite a spectacle!

How to find the group: We will meet outside the main (North) entrance of the Legislature building, on the steps that will lead us into the building.

UPDATE: Because there has been considerable interest in this event, I have increased the group size so that everyone can attend. Public tours of the legislature are limited to 20 people, so we may have to break into two groups, with half of the group taking the tour at 1 PM and half taking the tour at 2 PM. The tour lasts about 45 minutes, and while each half of the group is taking the tour, the other half of the group will tour the visitor centre.
