Nordegg, Alberta is located about 3 hours from Edmonton, due west of Red Deer, within the front ranges of the Rocky Moutains. We will travel to Nordegg on Friday evening (May 8/2015) and spend the Weekend, at the Shunda Creek Hostel, where we will have convenient access to the wonderful hikes (and other activities) available in the area. For those who are unfamiliar with the area, here are a few more notes about Nordegg and the Bighorn Backcountry Region: The David Thompson Corridor/Bighorn Backcountry Region stretches along an 83 km section of Hwy 11 in west-central Alberta, from Nordegg west to the Banff National Park boundary (where Hwy 11 intersects with Hwy 93 at Saskatchewan Crossing). The hamlet of Nordegg (pop. now approximately 200), located approximately 200 km west of Red Deer, is a former coal-mining town that once had a peak population of approximately 2500 people. Coal mining activities shut down in Nordegg in the mid 1950s and the remnants of the former Brazeau Collieries mine site are now a National Historic Site of Canada. The Shunda Creek Hostel, where we will be staying, is located north of the Nordegg townsite. Hiking Options There are numerous hikes in the area to choose from, and we will settle on which trails we will hike after we arrive in Nordegg, and check weather and snow conditions. I would like to do Coliseum Mountain, a 17 km return day hike with some elevation gain and a fantastic view of the valley, although we may not be able to get across the circque, but still have incredible views from the first summit. Sundays hike will be a short hike before heading back to Edmonton. A list of some of the trails nearby is available if you click on this link. I am not sure what the trails will be like by then, although we may encounter some mud and patches of snow. An excellent guide for hikes in the region is "The David Thompson Highway: A Hiking Guide" (Jane Ross and Daniel Kyba, Rocky Mountain Books), and if you can obtain a copy of this book it is definitely worthwhile. (There will also be copies available at the hostel). Accomodation: The hostel has 49 beds. There are co-ed dorm rooms for the (there are 5 beds per room) and private rooms. After you have paid for your spot, I will move you from the waitlist to the attendee list. | |||||||
