Itinerary:
This world renowned trail takes hikers to some of the best scenery in the province. Beyond Kinney Lake, the trail enters the valley of a thousand falls. Fed by Mist, Berg, and Robson glaciers, visitors often see and hear huge chunks of glacier ice break off into the blue green lake.

The hike to Berg Lake camp is a strenuous 21 km and 800 m net gain from the trail head parking lot. We will camp at Whitehorn Campground for one night, and Berg Lake for 2 nights. There will be a mandatory pre trip meeting. Date/Time TBC.

-THURSDAY Sept 11th
The plan is to meet at a location on the south side of Edmonton, and carpool to Mt Robson, leaving EARLY (7:00am) Thursday morning. We can stop in Jasper for any last minute supplies, maybe an ice cream and head to Mt Robson. Our goal is to reach the information center at Mt Robson by 1:00 pm, so we have to leave fairly early Thursday morning.
After we reach Mt Robson info center, we will pick up our back country passes at the info center, park at the trail head and hike in 11 km to the Whitehorn camp ground for Thursday night.

FRIDAY Sept 12th
Friday morning we break camp, and hike the rest of the trail (10 km) to Berg Lake, the tough part of the trail is starting on day 2, its a tough 3km slog up the cliff, then we get to the amazing Berg Lake, were we will camp for Saturday night. We will enjoy a nice supper at the shelter with the beauty of the glacier and lake and the backside of Mt Robson. Hopefully we will hear/see the glaciers crashing into the water!!

SATURDAY Sept 13th
Saturday we have options for a day hike: the goal is to head up to Snow bird pass, its a difficult day hike(20 km return), but well worth the views. Other options exist and we can discuss this on Friday, depending on how people feel, but Snow bird pass is the goal.

SUNDAY Sept 14th
Sunday we will pack up, hike back out and drive home, stopping for something to eat in Jasper.

I have done this trip once before and it is a bit of a tough hike, but do-able if you are fairly fit and have practised carrying a pack on some of the conditioning hikes, and worth the effort for the amazing scenery and back country camp experience.

The sights and sounds of the glaciers crashing into the lake is so amazing!! As is the valley of a thousand falls, and the possible day hikes from Berg are really amazing too.

THERE WILL BE A PRE TRIP MEETING Sept 3rd, 7:30 at Block 1912 to decide car pooling, tent partners, food, gear, and other details. SIGN UP FOR THE MEETING.

Max persons is 8, minimum 4. This is an amazing hike and worth the additional effort and time to get there.

THIS IS NOT FOR BEGINNERS. IF YOU HAVEN'T DONE CLUB EVENTS WITH A SIMILAR DIFFICULTY, YOU MAY BE CONTACTED ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH MOUNTAIN HIKING; THE ORGANIZER RESERVES THE RIGHT TO REJECT APPLICANTS WHO THEY FEEL ARE UNSUITABLE. PRE- CONDITIONING HIKES ARE STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.

Sign up on the wait list, then send me an email briefly outlining your hiking experience, gear, expectations, etc. Its a popular, but serious hike, you need to be prepared, (no wheelie suitcases or flip flops allowed)

I will then move you to the participant list when you have paid for the camping fees, since I have booked and paid for these already.

Required Items to Bring:
Tent (shared), backpack, Stove, fuel and pots, washing up stuff, food, water filters, bug spray, food bags (park provides bear resistant food storage lockers, warm clothes(weather in Sept can dip below zero, it could snow on us), warm sleeping bag, rain gear.

Carpool Cost: The event coordinator(s) will help you to arrange a centralized carpool if you require it, but it's not guaranteed. Please DO NOT pay your driver en route. Passengers will pay the coordinator, and he/she will distribute the money to the carpool drivers. SO PLEASE BRING CASH!!! Approximate vehicle expense for this event is $261.00 (calculated at total Km * $0.29, effective Thursday, April 25, 2024). This is based on $0.09/Km for maintenance, plus current gas price divided by 9. This cost will be multiplied by the number of carpooled cars, and divided by the number of carpool participants.

Notes:
This is a fairly difficult and sustained hike with significant elevation gain. YOU MUST BE ABLE TO CARRY A BACKPACK 14 KM WITH ELEVATION GAIN. There are wardens on site and it is a popular trail, but this is an intermediate backpacking trip and you need to be in good condition. You need a good backpack, but if you don' have one, you can rent. Let me know if you have any problems with obtaining gear. I have done this trip before, and weather and snow conditions are unpredictable, participants must understand that the suggested itinerary is subject to last minute revisions as required for group safety. BUT IT IS AMAZING!!!
