Itinerary:
This event is a walk through the Wagner Natural Area, a special piece of Boreal forest located between Edmonton and Spruce Grove. Affectionately called the Wagner Bog, it is famous for its many species of orchids and marl ponds.
The 2 km walk would first go through a hayfield looking for butterflies and dragonflies, weather permitting. Then we follow the trail in the forest, checking out the changes in vegetation as we go along. We will talk a bit about the hydrology of the site when we get to the boardwalk over the marl ponds. It is likely that a couple species of orchids will be blooming during the visit.
Then we'll finish up our walk through the woods and go in the picnic shelter for lunch. There is a porta-potty on site.
The walk is a quite easy, short stroll with no inclines or slopes. Expect mosquitoes to be plentiful and trails may be wet, so bring appropriate footwear.
We will be meeting a couple of other naturalists at the site to help out with their expertise.
