Located less than an hour away from Edmonton, Elk Island National Park of Canada protects the wilderness of the aspen parkland, one of the most endangered habitats in Canada. This park is home to herds of free roaming plains bison, wood bison, moose, deer, and elk.

The plan for our camping trip is to travel out to Elk Island on Saturday morning, where we will set up camp at the Sandy Beach campground on Astotin Lake. The campground is located very near the Astotin Lake beach. On Saturday, you might consider swimming in the lake, or you might choose to sit back on the beach to read a book during the afternoon. Canoeing and kayaking is also permitted on Astotin Lake. However, we will not be pre-arranging any canoe or kayak rentals. In the evening, we’ll cook our supper, wander around on the beach, relax, and roast marshmallows.

We are also interested in doing some hiking while we're staying at the park. So, once our camp is set up those interested can join us on an optional short hike. We will be hiking the Amisk Wuche Trail (2.5km, 1-1.5 hours). The trailhead for the Amisk Wuche trail is located right across the road from the campground.

On Sunday, we will pack up our camp bright and early in the morning. We plan to hike the Moss Lake trail, beginning our hike at approximately 10:30 AM. The trailhead for this hike is located less than 5 minutes from the campground, and the trail (13km, 3.5-4.5 hours) passes through a mixed wood forest.

IMPORTANT DETAILS REGARDING REGISTRATION FOR THIS EVENT:To register for this event, please sign up on the waiting list and then pay for your spot as soon as possible. Once payment has been received by the EOC, we will move people to the registered list for the event in the order that everyone pays, and NOT in the order that everyone signs up. This event will have a maximum of 12 participants, including ourselves.**

We have booked 3 adjacent campsites at the Sandy Beach campground in Elk Island National Park. All three campsites are walk-in tenting sites, but located very close (within 200 m or so) to a parking lot. The maximum occupancy for each of these sites is 2 tents. Prior to the event, please e-mail one of us, answering the following questions:

1. Is there another person participating in this event with whom you intend to share your tent with? Who?
2. Do you have a tent that you would be able to bring to the event to share with others? If so, what is the capacity of your tent?

We will be assigning tenting partnerships a few days prior to the even for those who need them. When assigning these partnerships, we will do our best to place people of the same gender in a tent.

TRANSPORTATION TO ELK ISLAND PARK: We are not planning to formally organize a carpool for this event, and we recommend that everyone arranges their own rides with someone you know and can rely on. We will, of course, help to arrange rides for anybody who needs such an arrangement to be made. Please note that refunds will NOT be given if a carpool arrangement falls through.

GUESTS: If you have an adult guest that you would like to bring along to the event, please have them register as a member of the EOC so that they can sign up for this event on their own. (This approach is easier for us. Guests cannot sign up on waitlists for EOC events.)
