Itinerary:
Science cafés are live events that involve a face-to-face conversation with a scientist about current science topics. They are open to everyone, and typically would take place in casual settings, such as pubs and coffeehouses. They represent an awesome opportunity to gain further understanding about a really interesting and potentially controversial up-and-coming aspect of science. These types of events are intended for everyone - it doesn't matter if you haven't taken a science class since high school.

The topic of discussion for the upcoming science café is Synthetic Biology . Synthetic Biology is a relatively new area of biotechnology that combines elements of science and engineering. The basic aim of this field of science is to take advantage of available knowledge in order to design completely new biological lifeforms, materials and systems that don't exist in nature.

There will be two scientists leading the discussion:
  • Dr. Peter Facchini: Canada Research Chair in Plant Biotechnology, University of Calgary
  • Dr. Tania Bubela: Assistant professor, Department of Public Health Sciences at the School of Public Health, University of Alberta

Please note: I am not actually involved in organizing this science café; this EOC event is only intended to facilitate allowing EOC members to attend together. While the event is free, space is very limited. You must pre-register with the event organizers.

We will meet inside the Billiard Club at 6:20, near the bar (the event begins at 6:30).
