Itinerary:
We will meet at the Belvedere LRT Station at 9:30 AM and leave from there at 9:45 AM. Don't be late! We will expect to arrive at the trail-head at about 10:30 AM.

Elk island is an island of natural beauty in Edmonton's back yard, so get away from the city for a few hours and enjoy a day out in the bush. The hike will be a moderate pace (3.5-4.5 km/hr) with occasional stops to enjoy the scenery and wildlife.

The forecast for this week is mainly sunny. Hopefully by Sunday the trials will be dry and we won't need to wear cleats or snowshoes. The plan is to hike the Shirley Lake Trail (12.6km) and stop for lunch midway. Conditions permitting, we will have a quick fire going and we can warm-up our hands and maybe our food. You could also bring something small to roast (sausages, marshmallow, etc.)

Required Items to Bring:
- Good hiking boots, possibly cleats, depending on the trail conditions.
- Weather appropriate clothing; dress in layers
- Water
- Money for carpool and park admission.
* Park admission is $7.80 per person, and your share of the carpool will probably come out to around $6.00 or $7.00. Please bring small bills - it's often hard to make change.
Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.
- Lunch or a snack
- Camera
- Something to roast

How to Get There:
Event Directions:To get to Elk Island National park, take Yellowhead (Hwy 16) about 30 km east of Edmonton. Turn north into the park and get a pass at the gates. The Shirley Lake trailhead is on your left north of the intersection for Tawayik Lake. The Hayburger trailhead is just past the Shirley Lake TH on your right.

Carpool Cost: The event coordinator(s) will help you to arrange a centralized carpool if you require it, but it's not guaranteed. Please DO NOT pay your driver en route. Passengers will pay the coordinator, and he/she will distribute the money to the carpool drivers. SO PLEASE BRING CASH!!! Approximate vehicle expense for this event is $29.00 (calculated at total Km * $0.29, effective Tuesday, April 30, 2024). This is based on $0.09/Km for maintenance, plus current gas price divided by 9. This cost will be multiplied by the number of carpooled cars, and divided by the number of carpool participants.

Notes:
If you're riding in the carpool with someone who has a group pass, you will be expected to chip in $5.00 towards their pass costs. After all, they're paying your way into the park!
If no one has a pass, park admission is $7.80 per person or $19.60 for a vehicle pass good for up to 7 people.
